Donald Trump is defending his plan to accept a luxury Boeing 747 from Qatar, calling it a gift “too valuable to refuse.” Speaking to Sean Hannity aboard Air Force One during a Middle East trip, Trump criticized the aging U.S. presidential aircraft and praised Qatar’s newer fleet. “We’re the United States—we should have the most impressive plane,” he said.
His visit comes shortly after the Trump Organization struck a deal in Qatar for a luxury golf resort near Doha. The move has sparked bipartisan concern, with critics citing the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which bans federal officials from accepting gifts from foreign powers without congressional approval.
Even Trump allies voiced alarm. Sen. Ted Cruz warned of espionage risks, and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito said she’d “be checking for bugs.” Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley called the idea “a threat to national security.”
Trump claims the plane will first go to the Department of Defense, then eventually to his presidential library, but aviation experts say converting the jet to Air Force One standards could cost over $1B and take years—hardly a bargain for taxpayers.
